our chat with Anberlin vocalist Stephen Christian and drummer Nathan
Young. This is a band that a lot of us have grown up with and will continue to
do so once we discover the splendor that is their new release Dark is the Way, Light is A Place. Never shying away from their 80’s influences, this time around Anberlin has delivered a stark contrast, not only in the record as a whole, but from their previous works. For those of you who never quite caught onto their last record New Surrender, you’re in for a treat. And for those of you who have been loyal fans throughout every Anberlin release, you won’t be disappointed.

Anberlin | Dark Is The Way, Light Is A Place

Diving deeper into their apparent 80’s obsession, Anberlin delivers yet another gem. Dark feels a bit like the album that should’ve come after Cities as they (hypothetically) transitioned into the more mellow territories of New Surrender. Have I lost you yet? As the title suggests, Dark relies on contrasts of feelings and topics. While tracks like “Closer” and “To the Wolves” show a slight return to form for those of us still hinging our Anberlin...

hen I sat down to write this interview that would later be conducted
with Mattie Montgomery (Frontman) of For Today I wrote the questions
in such a way, hoping to get some meat on Breaker (the new record), the
meaning behind it and some solid life wisdom from Mattie. What I got was more
like a five course meal. There is an overflow happening in Mattie’s life that has not only spilled, all over, onto this interview but also onto For Today's August 31st release.

have been around the block a time or two, not to mention countless tours
with some of the biggest names of today. Now, with their eagerly anticipated
second full length album, the heavily makeup’d Minnesota siblings are here to tell their fans that the end is near. No, this is not a turn or burn album. This is a wake up call, a call to arms that something big is on the horizon, whether it be a global issue or something within ourselves.

t is no wonder to me that As I lay Dying continues to sell out larger and larger venues every year, becoming one of the biggest bands in this scene. As I spoke with front man Tim Lambesis, one word kept coming to mind:  dedication. I heard his dedication to creating a better world screaming in the background while his adopted son from Ethiopia played at their California home, and as Tim explained the new album title The Powerless Rise which seems to parallel the ideals of those such as Mother Teresa and Martin Luther King Jr.

ecessity is the mother of invention. Think of how original this statement really is. What do we hear day after day? Cookie cutter bands with the same breakdowns, the same melodies and the same exhausted stories have become what we are spoon-fed and we are constantly asking for seconds. Maybe we believe that this is all there is for us, that we need to support and be grateful for what we do have even though it’s a copy of a copy of a copy.

wonder if the members of Underoath could have ever guessed that they would be touring the world promoting their fourth full-length with their fifth in the works when they released The Changing Of Times in 2002? his story needs no introduction but here is one anyway. Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the past six months then you’ve no doubt caught Adam Young’s Owl City on your radio, or on MTV, or at Barnes and Noble, or just about anywhere you go. His iTunes giant “Fireflies”, off the album Ocean Eyes (since been certified Gold), was written as an attempt to fight off insomnia in his parent’s basement in Owatonna, Minnesota and is a catchy sun drenched tune that perfectly encapsulates the world that Adam Young seems to live in, if only in his own head.

hen you watch a band tour constantly for 11 years turning themselves into, whether consciously or unconsciously, giants in the scene, you perceive them in a certain way. When you look at a band who were writing music and playing shows before you even attended your first, you build up an image of that band in your mind, a fear, a sort of respect, but mostly a picture of them being waited on, only stepping off of their massive tour bus to grace the stage and then return again to pure luxury.

t was the end of Junior High when I first heard of Switchfoot yet they had already been making waves for a few years. This was the case for a few of us but most didn’t know the name until ‘03 when “Meant To Live” catapulted them to the top of the charts and into the lime light. That first single, and the challenging second hit “Dare You To Move”,  were what gave them the name that they have today, but for those that have followed Switchfoot for the last decade know that there is much more to them than a couple big singles.

believe The Byrds said it best when they said there is a time for everything... The Byrds?... and A Plea For Purging seems to agree:  funny, but serious when it counts; outrageous at times, but always honest. They seem to grasp what is most important in life and they aren’t afraid to show you what they are really made of. There are not many filters with Plea, and that is why we love them.

abel them weird. Label them pioneers. Label them versatile. Just don’t label Showbread as a genre. Showbread is over ten years into their career and show no signs of either slowing down or conforming to any trends or styles. A lot of artists would claim this same statement with every last breath, but in reality, Showbread is the only one who has, time and time again, proved that they truly don’t care what people think.

elentlessly touring behind a new powerhouse record as the drummer of scene kings Underoath, waiting to release a new record with The Almost where he takes center stage, and running a quickly growing clothing line aptly named Pig Cloth, no one will ever call Aaron Gillespie lazy. At a young age, Gillespie was told that he would never be a good drummer and to not waste his time trying. The past decade has been spent proving those people wrong.

nown for their musical brutality and perfection in performance, August Burns Red has risen out of a sea of metal to make a run at the top spot in the genre. Though as kind and well dressed as they are you would never guess it if you saw them on the street. Since their first full length release of Thrill Seeker in 2005 ABR has been knocking down the walls of our boxes, allowing us to believe that music can sound as good live as it does on the album, that metal can be extremely technical yet appear simple, and all the while it can carry a strong message along with it.

ome people just always do their own thing no matter what other people may tell them. Some people just seemed specifically created to do what they do. One of the best examples of these observations has to be Anberlin frontman Stephen Christian. Whether it’s fronting the widely successful indie alternative act, Anberlin, turning down the volume to bring us his long awaited side project Anchor and Braille, or running his own non-profit organization, Stephen Christian lets his cool demeanor and passion for life shine through everything he chooses to put his hands in.
