Club Bones Interview - Hopecore Magazine November 2010ome&Live! has a way of lighting hearts on fire with love, and passion, and a desire to see needs met. This is another bright example of these shining characteristics. The best part of these stories is that they always involve normal people. Could be you or me. Barrett Colvin founded Club Bones with the desire to use this unique style of Argentinian shoe to give back to the mission of C&L!. For every shoe or shirt sold C&L! receives a portion of the sale so that dedicated musicians can continue to encourage and inspire us. I was eager to spotlight Club Bones because of their willingness to give of their time and resources to make this world a better place. May this interview not only inform you, but also inspire you to take what you have before you and do something with it.

Tell us a bit about yourself… How many people are involved in Club Bones?

Barrett Colvin: My name is Barrett Colvin, I recently graduated Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a degree in Graphic Design. I am the vocalist for See the Light, a band in the hardcore music ministry. I run Club Bones with the help of a few close friends who contribute by designing, screen printing, cutting, and sewing. Showbread, Ascend The Hill, Holding Onto Hope, and Silence O Israel are the bands that Club Bones sponsors. I consider them all family.

How did the idea come about? And how did you get started?

BC: The idea came about one day this last summer when I was thinking about my band’s record label, Come&Live! I wanted to create an organization that contributed to building the ministry. While playing around with name ideas for the company, I couldn’t escape the message Ezekiel 37 tells; the people who had been feeling deserted by God, with no hope for the future, are being reassured that God has the power to resurrect them. I want to motivate an army of believers willing to serve God and follow Him to restore hope and be a part of something bigger than themselves, to breathe life into dry bones. I shared my vision for the company with my friend, Anton Warkentin, and we collaborated together to design a logo based on the infinite triangle; a structural identity representing pieces fitting together like bones. I then put together the first pair of Bones alpargatas and the journey began!

A part of your profits go to a 501c3 Non-Profit right?

BC: Yes, for every purchase made, $10 goes to Come&Live!. My goal is to offer the most affordable clothing possible and still be able to donate a good chunk to the ministry.

Club Bones Interview - Hopecore Magazine November 2010What is Come&Live!, for those that don’t know, and why did you choose to support them?

BC: Come&Live!’s mission statement says, “Come&Live! is a  non-profit community dedicated to proclaiming the good news of Jesus. By joining hands with artists {musicianaries}, they provide them with guidance, direction and accountability to model a life of genuine faith. Their focus is in promoting the only true enduring treasure – loving others and living like JESUS. They choose to share music and profit as a humble example of radical generosity. They live simply to give generously, encouraging others to do the same. Their prayer is that God would use us to Give. Love. Share. and Revive.”   I am very inspired by the selflessness of the Come&Live!and I felt compelled give to the ministry in order to further promote the example of radical generosity.

What is the process for making these shoes? Did you have to be taught to make them?

BC: These shoes are a popular shoe in Argentina called alpargatas. I wish I knew how to make them, but they’re actually imported from Argentina. When I receive them, screen printed tags are sewn on to each pair and sent your way!

With other companies doing similar things to you, what has the response for Club Bones been so far?

BC: Most people recognize our shoes because they have seen alpargatas before. I love this style of shoe and I wanted to bring the original homemade alpargatas to customers here in the U.S. So far, people have loved the Bones! They are simple and we offer them at a great price!

Where would you like Club Bones to be in the future?

BC: Club Bones is expanding into a full clothing line. As the weather gets chilly we will start printing hoodies, crew necks, thermals, etc. For every holiday I hope to have something fun and creative. Eventually I would like Club Bones to become more of a youth group or a movement that involves much more than selling clothing. One day, I hope to have Bible studies and inspire more outreach ministries.

How can readers get their hands on a pair of these very sweet shoes?

BC: Check out our online shop at www.clubbonesmovement.com or catch us at a local California show where we’ll be selling our merchandise!

What do you feel it is about our generation that drives us to want to be a part of something bigger than ourselves? What is it for you?

BC: I believe this generation is at a crossroads. God calls us to create new and fresh ways of reaching unbelievers. Our generation is full of believers who are coming before Jesus willing and ready to follow the example He set; to love others selflessly and give of themselves. It’s amazing to see the rise of outspoken Christians in the hardcore music scene or young kids like my sister who lead foundations, like Cupcakes for Cancer, to raise money for kids battling the life threatening disease. Many people are truly selfless and willing and God takes those people and uses them for incredible things. My desire to serve God precedes all other desires. As a graphic designer and illustrator, I am always thinking of new and exciting ideas to glorify God through my artwork. God takes my creative mindset and brings me into fresh new areas of ministry. Club Bones is the culmination of my love for art, God, and His people.

Any final words you want to leave with the readers?

BC: Please add Club Bones to your prayers! Ask that God continue to form and shape something big! Buy some clothing and download FREE music!! www.clubbonesmovement.com & www.comeandlive.com Thank you!
